10 of the best boxers under 25
Teofimo Lopez outpoints Vasiliy Lomachenko
  1. TEOFIMO LOPEZ
Appropriately nicknamed “The Takeover”, New Yorker Lopez scored a stunning upset victory over the brilliant Vasiliy Lomachenko two months ago to become the undisputed lightweight champion of the world.
  2. JAIME MUNGUIA
This marauding Mexican defeated Sadam Ali in May 2018 to win the WBO super-welterweight crown. Five successful defences followed, including against Liam Smith, before Munguia moved up to middleweight.
  3. DAVID BENAVIDEZ
Phoenix, Arizona’s Benavidez has already held the WBC super-middleweight title on two separate occasions.
He lost the belt on the scales in August, having seen his first reign end after he tested positive for cocaine.
  4. ELWIN SOTO
A come-from-behind triumph in June last year saw Soto take the WBO light-flyweight strap from Angel Acosta. The Mexican pocket rocket has since retained his championship against Edward Heno and Carlos Buitrago.
  5. WILFREDO MENDEZ
Another fighter from the lighter weights who has defended his world title twice is WBO strawweight boss Mendez. The Puerto Rican dethroned Vic Saludar in August 2019 and was due to defend his belt for a third time shortly after we went to press.
  6. PEDRO TADURAN
Twelve months after an unsuccessful attempt at claiming WBC strawweight honours, Filipino Taduran collected the vacant IBF crown at 105lbs in September last year. His one defence so far ended in a majority technical draw.
  7. SHAKUR STEVENSON
Stevenson secured the vacant WBO featherweight title by beating Joet Gonzalez 14 months ago. Now campaigning at super-feather, the Newark, New Jersey marvel is aiming to become a two-division world ruler.
  8. JUNTO NAKATANI
Japan’s Nakatani announced himself by pummelling Milan Melindo to defeat, before picking up the vacant WBO flyweight belt last month with a one-sided victory over Giemel Magramo.
  9. DEVIN HANEY
Essentially, Haney is a secondary WBC lightweight titlist, as Teofimo Lopez holds WBC Franchise champion status at 135lbs. The Las Vegas-based prodigy swept aside Yuriorkis Gamboa last month.
  10. BRANDON FIGUEROA
Figueroa is in possession of a WBA secondary strap. The super-bantamweight from Weslaco in Texas drew with an overweight Julio Ceja but has conquered the likes of Oscar Escandon and Moises Flores.
