10 key heavyweight fights at Wembley Arena
  1. TOMMY LOUGHRAN W PTS 10 MAURICE STRICKLAND (1935)
In his first recorded outing in Europe, Philadelphian great Loughran got the better of New Zealand’s Strickland over the distance.
  2. JACK PETERSEN W PTS 15 LEN HARVEY (1936)
Petersen overcame Harvey on points to successfully defend his British and Commonwealth titles. It was their third meeting, with the two fighters having secured one win each in their two previous bouts.
  3. BONECRUSHER SMITH W KO 10 FRANK BRUNO (1984)
After 21 straight victories, British favourite Bruno looked like he was going to add another win to his ledger. That was until North Carolina’s Smith unleashed a brutal barrage of punches to claim a final-frame knockout.
  4. FRANK BRUNO W KO 1 GERRIE COETZEE (1986)
Two years after losing his undefeated record against Smith, Bruno bulldozed his way past South Africa’s former WBA champion Coetzee in under two minutes.
  5. LENNOX LEWIS W RSF 7 GARY MASON (1991)
A collision between European titlist Lewis and British boss Mason saw Lewis triumph in a battle of unbeatens. Mason was unable to continue after his right eye was swollen shut.
  6. OLIVER McCALL W RSF 2 LENNOX LEWIS (1994)
By the time Lewis faced off against McCall, the big Brit was the reigning WBC king. However, he lost the crown to the Chicago native via stoppage in a major upset.
  7. AUDLEY HARRISON W RSF 1 MIKE MIDDLETON (2001)
The highly anticipated professional debut of Britain’s 2000 Olympic gold medallist Harrison was all over in the opener, as “A-Force” made short work of Florida’s overmatched Middleton.
  8. MICHAEL SPROTT W KO 3 AUDLEY HARRISON (2007)
Though Harrison would prevail in their rematch three years later, Sprott was victorious over his fellow Brit in emphatic style in their initial encounter.
  9. DAVID HAYE W RSF 1 TOMASZ BONIN (2007)
Haye became a unified cruiserweight champ in late 2007, but earlier in the year the Briton had a heavyweight cameo against Poland’s Bonin, whom he blasted past in double-quick time.
  10. TYSON FURY W UD 12 DERECK CHISORA (2011)
In the first of his two wins over Chisora, Fury took his rival’s ‘0’, as well as his British and Commonwealth belts, with a success on the scorecards.
