Nick Ball vs. TJ Doheny : Live Updates & Results

Nick Ball and TJ Doheny weigh in

23:27

Nick Ball wins after Doheny corner stoppage

After 10 completed rounds, Michael Alexander stops the contest. TJ Doheny could take no more. “The crowd want to see all action, but I can box and I showed that,” said Ball.

Frank Warren says the plan is to tempt Inoue into the ring at the end of the year. The official verdict spoke of a TKO but it felt like a corner retirement. Good win for Ball, showed different dimensions to his game. The body shots worked well at the end.

23:14

A point off for Ball

Referee Michael Alexander docked the featherweight champion a point in round nine for wrestling Doheny to the canvas. He did warn the Liverpool man earlier. Doheny’s right eye is starting to close.

23:04

Nick Ball raising the temperature

Doheny has gone from slowing the pace to feeling the pace. At the end of the sixth, Nick Ball landed a quality one-two. TJ’s legs stiffened briefly as the champion’s pace raised steadily.

23:00

Doheny slowing down the pace

Carl Frampton has it 3-2 to Ball after five. Doheny’s punching power is a possible distractor, keeping Ball at bay. TJ’s wide stance and head movement are solid assets for the Irish veteran who has started fairly well.

22:51

Ball breaking through

Ball ends the third round strongly, catching Doheny with a looping left hook. Doheny looks like he’s feeling the pace now. He is near 40 to be fair.

22:43

Ball causes an early fall

Things have got a bit weird in Liverpool. Annoyed by Doheny’s grappling tactics, Ball kicked him in the backside. TJ took a little dramatic tumble. Ref Mr Alexander seems to have sorted it out, although Doheny did a wobbly walk similar to the Inoue finish.

22:37

Nick Ball and TJ Doheny are in the ring

The main eventers are in the ring, ready for a rumble. Doheny wanders over to have a little word with the WBA featherweight champion, Nick Ball. Security break it up before anything starts.

Pawel Kardyni, Jose Roberto Torres and John Latham are the three judges. Michael Alexander is the third man in the ring.

22:10

Jack Turner is a natural puncher

“And there’s the power of Jack Turner!” says the commentator. Turner suddenly upped the levels, unloading some blazing hooks. Farrag’s head briefly drifted into speedball territory as referee Steve Gray toiled to jump in between them.

The time is announced as 41 seconds of round two. Looked like a right hand splayed Farrag’s senses. The finishing instincts were on point for Turner who stepped inside and blazed away. Outstanding finish. Turner picks up the WBA International super-flyweight title for his efforts. 11-0 with 10 KOs now.

22:02

Jack Turner looking to explode against Farrag

A Merseyside derby going down here. Experienced veteran Ryan Farrag will look to take Jack Turner a few rounds. Scheduled for 10. Turner is not used to doing many minutes.

21:52

Andrew Cain beats Charlie Edwards on points

Wasn’t an exciting affair that. Carl Frampton, scoring for TNT, has scored it 114-114 a draw. Be interesting to see how the judges have seen it. Victor Loughlin, the referee, didn’t have much to do in there.

The three judges have handed in their cards and we have a split verdict: John Latham scored it 115-114 to Cain, joined by Marcus McDonnell at 116-112. Steve Gray went 115-113 to Charlie Edwards.

Cain leaves as the British, Commonwealth and WBC Silver bantamweight champion. “That was a really hard fight to score,” says Becky Ives on TNT. It was an even harder fight to watch.

21:39

Pain for Cain as Edwards keeps dancing

Same patterns here as Cain is coming forward, poking out the jab, waiting for Charlie Edwards to tire out. He might be waiting a while. Edwards letting go with a few sneaky shots as Cain wades in. Charlie is making Sunny Edwards look like Arturo Gatti here.

21:21

Cain’s frustration as Charlie moves

Is Edwards doing enough to win the rounds? That’s the question. There’s boxing and moving and then there’s running. The judges will need to decide where Edwards’ activities currently sit.

21:08

Edwards moving, Cain stalking

Edwards emerged from round one with a bit of damage to the head, caused by Cain’s errant elbow. Undeterred, Charlie continues to circle the heavier hitter, prodding the jab, not allowing Cain to set his feet for the big shots.

Cain might be getting frustrated as he places the gloves behind his back, dropping a little bit of showboating in for good measure.

21:02

Andrew Cain and Charlie Edwards in the ring

I’ve been looking forward to this one, as local puncher Andrew Cain and former world champion Charlie Edwards go at it for 12 rounds, or less if Cain has any say about it. An intriguing clash of styles.

20:49

Herrera gets the stoppage

The Cuban piles it on and referee John Latham steps in at 2-31 of round seven. Moments earlier, the doctor had been pulled in to check on Macias’ cut eye and some potential blood from the ear. Herrera enjoying the win with some dancing.

20:43

Herrera on top, corner remains unhappy

“I want you to back him up with your jab, don’t walk him down looking for one single shot,” McNally yells at his man. Macias’ left eye is badly cut. The corner has vaselined him up a bit for round seven.

20:35

Herrera boxing more as Macias keeps swinging

Joe McNally’s verbal barrage has got through to Herrera who boxes clever in the fourth. Macias is as tough as old boots, soaking it all up, hurt at times, but pitching constantly. It would be interesting to see how Herrera deals with someone putting it on him for 10 or 12 rounds.

20:25

A bit of Latino heat on Herrera

This is a tasty test for Herrera who has his head high enough for squat bulldog Macias to land some winging hooks in the opening couple of rounds. Richie Woodall reckons the uppercut is there for Herrera who made quite the entrance. Macias is struggling in round two to fend Herrera off.

20:19

Time for some heavy-handed action as Herrera enters the arena

Referee John Latham has pulled together Cuba’s Jadier Herrera and Mexico’s Jose Macias for a potentially explosive lightweight affair. I watched Herrera box in Belfast last year and he is explosive.

20:08

Ionut Baluta gets the win

Baluta seems pleased with his output as the final bell rings. Strand on the other hand seems nervous. The judges’ cards are in and they read: 97-93 for Strand, 98-91 to Baluta (seemed a little wide) and…96-94 once again to Baluta.

The old road warrior gets another scalp on UK soil. Veteran judge Terry O’Connor with the deciding scorecard at the end there. Strand and his corner did seem pensive at the conclusion.

19:59

Strand lands on his back

Baluta finds a way back in it to some degree as Brad Strand gets dished out a round nine count. Replays indicate Baluta stepped on his opponent’s foot. Referee Marcus McDonnell missed that incident and gave a count.

19:48

Facial damage for Strand, Baluta turning up the heat

Strand has a cut around the left eyebrow following a clash of heads. George Scholfield is busy dealing with it in the corner. In to round seven here. Fair to say that it’s Strand’s fight to lose?

19:39

Strand and deliver

Strand is trying to stand off and use his jab to dictate. Baluta’s game is all about getting inside, often from unorthodox angles, and making life uncomfortable for opponents. So far, Strand is doing well. It’s a case of staying switched on for the Red Triangle boxer.

19:26

Brad Strand in for a tough night’s work

The next fight is underway over in Liverpool as Brad Strand looks to deal with the pressure cooker style of Ionut Baluta. Streetsmart Baluta doesn’t do easy nights so if Strand wins, he’ll have to earn it. Baluta has a win over Andrew Cain who meets Charlie Edwards later in the evening.

19:09

Clarke wins every round against Protkunas; battles bad cut

Stephen Clarke gets the win, 60-54 on referee Steve Gray’s scorecard. Clarke boxed maturely, dealt with a nasty cut. Good lessons learned for the victor, but nothing much coming back from Protkunas. More offensive foes will come down the line.

19:00

Bad cut for Clarke

Is that a little touch of facial damage for Clarke? Richie Woodall has spotted a right eye blemish. Scratch that, it’s a nasty rip on the eyelid. Other than that, Clarke is winning the rounds with his standard left and right hands. Replays indicate a head clash.

18:53

Clarke has the Smiths in his corner

All Clarke so far, going into round three. As expected given this kind of learning opponent. Can the Liverpudlian get the stoppage? Former world title challenger Stephen Smith has offered some words of advice to his man between rounds.

18:45

Stephen Clarke in the ring

Things have got underway in Liverpool as far as the TNT broadcast is concerned. Middleweight Stephen Clarke is in the ring against Dmitri Protkunas. The Estonian was described in the introductions as a veteran, but the 22-year-old doesn’t look like your usual grizzled journeyman.
