If Jaron Ennis were to move back down to 147lbs, then former undisputed welterweight king Zab Judah is certain who would win between him and Devin Haney.
Before becoming a two-division unified champion at 154lbs, Ennis dethroned Eimantas Stanionis with a sixth-round stoppage for the WBA world title in April 2025.
While also holding the IBF strap, he became the consensus top dog at 147lbs and then moved up to super-welterweight, where he toppled Xander Zayas for the WBO and WBA titles last June.
As a result of his seventh-round stoppage, many now consider him one of the pound-for-pound stars ahead of his expected unification match with IBF champion Josh Kelly early next year.
Another fighter at the top of his game, meanwhile, is Haney, who became a three-division world champion by unanimously outpointing and dethroning Brian Norman Jr last November.
In doing so, he claimed the WBO welterweight title but has not fought since, despite having been linked to fights with Shakur Stevenson and Keyshawn Davis.
As for a potential clash with Ennis at 147lbs, former two-weight world champion Judah has told MillCity Boxing that he would make Haney a sizable favourite.
“If they bring Boots back down to 147[lbs] then I definitely got Dev, because Boots gotta come down and he could be a little fatigued at that weight.
“Boots does good at 154[lbs], and I just can’t see Dev going up to 154 with all the success and great things he’s accomplishing right now.”
Indeed, it could be a case that Haney wins at his more natural weight whereas, at 154lbs, Boots would boast more pronounced physical advantages over the skilled technician.
Bill Haney, father and trainer of Devin, has maintained that Ennis remains on their ‘hit list’, meaning a move to super-welterweight is on the cards for the future.
