MATCHROOM Boxing have today released a statement regarding the Galal Yafai–Francisco Rodriguez Jr bout which took place 18 days ago.
At the bp PULSE Live Arena in Birmingham, Yafai defended his WBC interim flyweight belt against the 32-year-old Mexican.
In a hard-fought affair, Yafai was hurt, cut, and dropped in the final round before losing to Rodriguez on points.
The result may now be in question, however, following Matchroom’s announcement published on social media this morning.
It read:
“Today, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association informed Matchroom, the World Boxing Council and the British Boxing Board of Control that Francisco Rodriguez has returned an adverse analytical finding as part of a post-fight night anti-doping test following his bout with Galal Yafai on June 21st, 2025.
The matter will be handled by the BBBofC and the WBC.”
Yafai responded to the news via Matchroom’s Instagram post, saying: “F***ing disgusting! Something needs to change and very soon!”
The development comes just seven weeks after another Mexican fighter, Jaime Munguia, returned an adverse VADA test result following his revenge win over Bruno Surace.
Munguia has been given until July 7 to provide an explanation, after both his A and B samples were reported to contain banned substances.
