WHEN the event was announced, boxing fans knew that Canelo-Crawford was sure to be the biggest boxing bonanza of the calendar. Now, it is understood that a world title contest has been added to the ‘bill’, but that the fight will take place on the Thursday of fight week.
The full Canelo-Crawford Saturday undercard was officially confirmed last week, with a host of intriguing fights set to go ahead, even without the almost-standardised offerings of world title fights prior to the main-event.
A solid free-to-view six-fight YouTube preliminary card only adds to the build-up, but it always seemed as though Dana White and Turki Al-Alshikh were not done yet, with rumours swirling that further fights would be scheduled for fight week.
On his Instagram, WBO flyweight world champion Anthony Olascuaga, 9-1 (6 KOs), has now confirmed that he will be fighting in Las Vegas on Thursday, September 11, amid rumours of his participation on the extended Canelo-Crawford marathon card.
Boxing News has been informed that Olascuaga will take on Puerto Rico’s Juan Carlos Camacho-Rivera, 19-1 (8 KOs), who is well ranked with the WBO due to his WBO NABO flyweight title – claimed in a split-decision triumph over Jayson Mama last October.
With just 12 days to go until the Canelo-Crawford fight week commences, the announcement of the Thursday bill is expected imminently. Although, it is unclear how many fights will take place or whether Olascuaga-Camacho could even be a solitary addition.
There is also speculation that the fight week undercard could instead take place on Wednesday, September 10, meaning fights would take place after the public workouts for the main bill – as has been the case on previous cards which Al-Alshikh has worked on.
