Deontay Wilder has revealed the latest development on his proposed fight with Oleksandr Usyk.
Usyk surprised the boxing world recently when he announced he wants a showdown with Wilder next, despite many believing that the American’s best days are behind him.
Wilder was once WBC heavyweight champion from 2015 to 2020, making 10 defences of the belt during that time, but four defeats in the past few years seemed to suggest ‘The Bronze Bomber’ may never reach those same heights again.
He could now be presented with an opportunity to get back to the top though after WBC, WBA and IBF champion Usyk called out Wilder for a fight, and a major update on whether it could take place has now been shared.
Speaking to Seconds Out, Wilder explained that negotiations are ongoing, and that he thinks it is ‘definitely’ going to take place.
“That fight I wouldn’t say it’s close, but it is in negotiations. My heart is still pumping with joy. I think it’s definitely going to happen. The biggest thing and best thing about it is we’re in negotiations, it’s not just talk. It’s real conversations we’re having amongst both of these teams.
“I’m looking forward to it. I know how boxing is, how you can have something one minute and the next minute you have nothing, but this right here I think it’s going to be solid and if it does it will be a hell of a fight to watch.”
Wilder’s last fight took place in June, where he claimed a seventh round stoppage win over Tyrrell Herndon, with a big improvement likely needed if he is to defeat Usyk.
