Why Kell Brook is Gennady Golovkin’s ‘biggest challenge’
Chris Farina, K2 Promotions/Golden Boy Promotions

THIS week’s edition of Boxing News magazine features an exclusive interview with Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler.

Do you agree with Gennady that this is the biggest challenge of his career?

I think so, he certainly looks at it that way. People say ‘he’s the smallest guy Gennady has ever fought’ but when you look at them side by side, Kell’s a big guy. Certainly they’ll bring the advantages that Kell has, different speed, different movement, and we know it’s not unprecedented, we’ve seen welters move up and beat middleweights. The main example is Ray Leonard beating [Marvin] Hagler, and Ray wasn’t even in the prime of his career.

Look at Kell, he’s 30 years old and in the prime of his career, in peak form. It definitely presents a challenge for Gennady. Look, Gennady is the favourite, but he would be the favourite against any middleweight in the world. The odds, they’re the shortest they’ve been for a Golovkin opponent since the [Grzegorz] Proksa fight.

To read the full interview, a feature on Canelo Alvarez, ringside report from the Olympic Games and much more don’t miss the current issue of Boxing News magazine.
