Why Andy Lee is at his peak

Lee’s trainer Adam Booth speaks to John Dennen before the Billy Joe Saunders fight

Why Andy Lee is at his peak

ADAM BOOTH, trainer of WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee, believes his man is at his peak for tonight’s clash with Billy Joe Saunders at the Manchester Arena.

This world title fight has been twice postponed but it’s given Lee plenty of time to prepare. “Andy’s a consummate professional,” Booth explained. “His base level of fitness has been maintained for such a long period of time.

“His physical conditioning is peaking, when you consider his determination, his desire, the fact that he’s become a world champion (he wants to keep that belt now), his age, his experience. This is a good time for Andy.”

Lee has come through tough fights, against the likes of Matt Korobov, Peter Quillin and more. Booth believes that seasoning will help Lee, though won’t be the decisive factor against Saunders. “They might make a difference on a daily basis where Andy won’t suffer the same anxieties as fighters that haven’t been tested those ways, because he’s been there, he knows, he’s proved to himself that he can come through these moments,” Adam said. “Billy Joe presents his own unique set of challenges because of the way that he boxes and that’s what we’ve trained for.”
