WBC to stage Las Vegas-based esports tournament ahead of Canelo-Crawford

THIS week, Las Vegas is set to play host to the standout boxing card of the year as Terence Crawford attempts to dethrone Canelo Alvarez. Now, there has been a new addition to the blockbuster fight week, as the WBC have confirmed an esports tournament.

Already, fans are being treated to two additional fight week cards, with Bek Nurmaganbet and Steven Sumpter colliding in one of five fights following Wednesday’s public workout.

Then, atop a five-fight Thursday bill, Anthony Olascuaga attempts to defend his WBO flyweight world title against Juan Carlos Camacho-Rivera.

Of course, these additional offerings appear alongside the now-standardised pre-fight procedure of grand arrivals, public workouts, press conferences and weigh-ins ahead of an event of such magnitude.

However, a fresh offering is now being offered to fans, with the WBC and Steel City Interactive announcing an esports tournament, named the ‘WBC Creator League’, for Friday.

10 gaming content creators have battled through the qualifiers on the popular boxing game, Undisputed, to earn the right to compete at the event and challenge for the inaugural WBC Creator League Belt at the HyperX Arena at the Luxor Hotel & Casino.

Speaking with excitement ahead of the tournament finals, CEO and Founder of Steel City Interactive, Ash Habib, described the event as a ‘dream come true’.

“The Undisputed and WBC Creator League Finals is a dream come true for us at Steel City Interactive.

“We’ve poured our passion for boxing into Undisputed, and to see it come to life on this stage, with the WBC and creators who play at such a high level, is unreal.

“This event is about celebrating competition, community, and the sport we all love.”

Meanwhile, WBC President, Mauricio Sulaimán, looked ahead to what could prove to be the beginning of a ‘new era of boxing entertainment’.

“The WBC is thrilled to partner with Steel City Interactive for this groundbreaking event.

“The Undisputed and WBC Creator League Finals brings together the worlds of boxing and esports in a way that honours the spirit of competition and innovation.

“We can’t wait to present the belt to the champion and celebrate this new era of boxing entertainment.”

A host of familiar faces from the world of boxing are expected to be in attendance for the action, and tickets for the event are available to purchase here.
