WBC President proposes tournament to find opponent for Gennady Golovkin

Gennady Golovkin still wants Canelo

WBC President proposes tournament to find opponent for Gennady Golovkin

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has suggested creating a tournament with the IBF and WBA to find an opponent for their middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin.

Golovkin added the WBC strap to his IBF and WBA ones when Canelo Alvarez vacated it, meaning the Kazakh – Canelo’s mandatory – inherited it.

Canelo’s vacation of the belt looks to have stalled negotations for a monster fight with ‘GGG’ and so Sulaiman feels steps should be taken to find a suitable contender for Golovkin.

“I think this would be very interesting to discuss with the WBA and the IBF, as we are trying to come up with a procedure to find the next mandatory challenger,” he said.

“This is only an idea and a proposal. We don’t know the status of the other two organizations.”

The IBF and WBA have not yet responded to the proposal, and it’s an interesting theory on paper – but would be hard to implement.

Sulaiman’s suggestion seems to convey that he does not feel Canelo and Golovkin will come to terms anytime soon, however he thinks the pair will still meet in the ring.

He said: “I’m sure they will fight eventually. It’s a fight which represents the best of boxing today. I hope they come to an agreement.”
