WBC orders Sam Eggington-Lee Cutler rematch

WBC orders Sam Eggington-Lee Cutler rematch

SAM Eggington and Lee Cutler have been ordered to take part in an immediate rematch by the WBC following a successful appeal launched by Cutler’s team. Their first fight took place on April 20 on the undercard of Ben Whittaker’s win over Liam Cameron in Birmingham.

Eggington won by technical decision when the bout was halted after nine rounds. Both men suffered facial damage. Eggington’s was deemed too severe to continue, so the bout went to the cards. Sam was up by scores of 87-85 (twice) and 90-83. He grabbed the win, on relatively home turf, taking home the WBC International super-welterweight title for his efforts.

Controversy arose from the fact that the initial damage was caused by a legal punch. After that, numerous head clashes helped open the cut further. Earlier today, Lee Cutler took to Instagram to reinforce the details, saying, “WBC have ordered a rematch. Let’s hope they take it so we can settle the score. Chaos vs Savage 2”.

Given his past form, it’s doubtful Eggington would swerve such an invitation. However, when Cutler’s team initially complained and the matter went to a WBC Committee for inspection, Eggington made his feelings known to Boxing News.

“I’ve never moaned about anything in this game; win, lose, or draw, but if I was made to rematch someone for the reasons that he has put forward then I would refuse,” he said.

“He is 100 per cent trying to find a loophole, he was on a bit of a wave after his last win and now he is back at square one. Some of us dust ourselves off and get back to work and some of us are little b***hes that try and find a loophole to get back to where they were.”
