Shakur Stevenson set up a potential welterweight showdown with Conor Benn at the weekend and Frank Warren has now opened up on his thoughts regarding that potential encounter.
Stevenson schooled Teofimo Lopez to get his hands on the WBO super-lightweight world title and become the third-youngest four-division world champion in boxing history on Saturday night.
However, rather than looking toward his new rivals at 140lbs, the Newark sensation utilised the post-fight interview to call out Conor Benn, who is poised to return to the 147lb scene after a near four-year absence from the division.
Since then, Stevenson has been stripped of his WBC lightweight world title and it seems as though the 28-year-old will campaign at either super-lightweight and welterweight moving forward.
Although, in an interview with The Stomping Ground, Queensberry promoter Warren appeared to dismiss Benn’s chances in their possible fight, admitting that he believes that the Briton’s triumph over Chris Eubank Jr counts for little when tasked with someone as talented as Stevenson.
“He is looking to make a fight, he is looking to earn some money but listen, Shakur Stevenson isn’t Chris Eubank Jr.
“There is a big appeal and if he [Benn] gets his chance it’s a big fight for him but don’t confuse Shakur with Chris Eubank Jr.”
It remains to be seen what Stevenson’s next move will be, but with no 135lb belt to his name, it is unlikely that he will return to his natural weight class, meaning either super-lightweight unifications or a welterweight clash with Benn can be expected for mid-2026.
