Fabio Wardley‘s first world title defence looks set to come against a domestic rival.
Wardley became WBO heavyweight champion late last year after being upgraded from interim status when Oleksandr Usyk vacated the belt rather than face the mandatory challenge of the Ipswich man.
It was an extremely successful 2025 for Wardley, who first claimed a stoppage victory over Justis Huni in June, before following that up with an upset knockout win against Joseph Parker in October.
Since becoming champion, Wardley has been linked to a long list of opponents, including the likes of Tyson Fury and Derek Chisora, but it appears another Brit has won the race to challenge for world honours.
It was first reported by DAZN earlier this week that Daniel Dubois was set to take on Wardley, and now according to Ariel Helwani, the fight is a ‘done deal.’
“Breaking: Fabio Wardley vs Daniel Dubois for the WBO world heavyweight title is a done deal for May 9th, per multiple sources. The fight will take place in the UK. Venue is still TBC.”
Ring Magazine have since stated that the bout is set to take place in Manchester.
“Fabio Wardley and Daniel Dubois are finalizing a deal for a WBO heavyweight title fight on May 9th in Manchester, UK, sources tell The Ring’s Mike Coppinger.”
Dubois is a former IBF heavyweight champion who has claimed stoppage wins over fighters such as Anthony Joshua, Filip Hrgovic and Jarrell Miller, but he came up short in his bid for undisputed honours against Usyk last July.
That was the last time Dubois was in the ring, and after initially leaving trainer Don Charles to join Tony Sims, he has once again linked up with his old coach for this upcoming challenge.
