Derek Chisora and Deontay Wilder are reportedly on the verge of announcing an April heavyweight clash, ending any current talk of the American facing Oleksandr Usyk for his unified titles.
Usyk called out Wilder late last year, overlooking tougher match-ups in an attempt to round out his era by beating all the big names. Though ‘The Bronze Bomber’ was keen, those talks, somewhere along the line, were taken over by a more suitable clash against British veteran Chisora.
With multiple reports suggesting confirmation is close, talk turns to who will come out on top — Wilder, who possesses one of the most devastating right hands in the sport but seems well past his best, or Chisora, who enters his 50th bout enjoying somewhat of an Indian summer after a number of losses.
When asked by Daily Mail Boxing for his prediction back in 2024, Usyk — who has always been complimentary of Chisora since he beat him via unanimous decision in 2020 — backed the Brit.
While fans largely know what to expect when ‘Del Boy’ steps through the ropes, Wilder has not answered vital questions since back-to-back losses to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang. In those bouts, the knockout artist from Alabama looked gun-shy and off-pace. A comeback win over Tyrell Herndon did little in showing what stage he is at in his campaign. A loss in the UK to Chisora could well spell retirement.
As for the fan-favourite Brit, he has previously said that he will retire after his 50th fight, though most believe he will fight on if he wins. Should that be the case, a previously discussed fight with WBO World Champion Fabio Wardley remains an option.
