Deontay Wilder was linked to a challenge for Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight world titles but instead opted to take on Derek Chisora next and Usyk has predicted how ‘The Bronze Bomber’ will fare against what was one of his most difficult former opponents.

Out of form and out of sorts, you would be forgiven for thinking that Wilder is out of the running when thinking of potential challengers for Usyk’s unified heavyweight world titles, after suffering four defeats in his last six bouts.

However, the pair had been linked to a clash earlier this year, until Wilder pulled out of the proposed fight due to a lack of progress in negotiations, instead accepting the opportunity to be the final opponent of Chisora’s career.

Meanwhile, Usyk has announced a shock fight with Dutch kickboxer Rico Verhoeven, who is set to challenge for the WBC heavyweight world title despite a professional boxing record of 1-0, and an official 12-year run of inactivity.

Still, Wilder remains on Usyk’s radar and a victory over ‘Del Boy’ would give the Tuscaloosa-born former champion hope that a showdown with the Ukrainian could soon take place, giving him the chance to join an elite group of two-time heavyweight rulers.

When previously discussing a then potential contest between Wilder and Chisora, who he defeated back in 2020, Usyk tipped his former foe to come out on top.

“[Deontay Wilder vs Derek Chisora?] Erm, Derek Chisora [wins].”

Wilder-Chisora takes place at the O2 Arena in four weeks’ time, as both men reach the landmark of 50 professional bouts each.
