Unified champion Sebastian Fundora could face unbeaten opponent following Errol Spence fallout

THE eagerly awaited return of Errol Spence Jr has reportedly been put on ice, with Sebastian Fundora now targeting a new opponent.

According to ESPN boxing journalist Mike Coppinger, the pair were originally slated to lock horns last October before March 29 emerged as an alternative date.

Fundora, 21-1-1 (13 KOs), was expected to make the first defence of WBC and WBO world super-welterweight titles after claiming a split decision against Tim Tszyu last year.

Despite taking the opportunity on short notice, the 27-year-old was able to bounce back from his stunning loss against Brian Mendoza in impressive fashion, utilising his long levers to edge past Tszyu.

Spence, 28-1 (22 KOs), meanwhile, is yet to enter the squared circle since his punishing ninth-round stoppage defeat to Terence Crawford back in 2023.

But while it appeared that the former welterweight king would return to action this year, his mooted clash with Fundora has now seemingly been scuppered.

The news was delivered yesterday via Coppinger’s X account, with WBO president Gustavo Olivieri adding that he would not have sanctioned the bout.

Nevertheless, Fundora’s WBC strap was still set to be on the line, presenting Spence with the opportunity to become a two-division champion.

Regardless, with Spence now out of the picture, Coppinger has mentioned unbeaten super-welterweight contender Charles Conwell as a possible opponent for Fundora’s next outing.

The 27-year-old is ranked top five in the world with the WBC and WBO, representing a solid dance partner for ‘The Towering Inferno.’
