Tyson Fury has deemed two former opponents worthy of a world title shot as they gear up to face off.
The Morecambe man is set for a ring return of his own following two losses to Oleksandr Usyk and a year in retirement. The Ukrainian great still holds three of the four major belts, having vacated the WBO which was then awarded to former interim champion, Fabio Wardley.
Though the WBC, WBA and WBO are still firmly in Usyk’s possession, Fury has made it clear in the past that he believes the belts should either be vacated or stripped if his championship rival does not plan on facing mandatory challengers.
‘The Gypsy King’ believes one contest that deserves a belt is between Derek Chisora and Deontay Wilder, two men he has faced three times each. Though there has been no official announcement, both Chisora and Wilder have announced they have signed contracts.
Speaking on Instagram about the fight, Fury urged one of the sanctioning bodies to ‘put a belt on the line.’
“There should be a belt on the line, too. One of you sanctioning bodies, you’ve got two legendary fighters here. A world champion with 10 title defences from the USA and an absolute warlord from the United Kingdom who has fought everybody and never ducked anybody and would have been a good heavyweight in any era in Derek Chisora. Put a belt on the line.”
Chisora is ranked number two the IBF, six with the WBO and 14 with the WBC. Wilder, who has been largely inactive and off-form, is 13 with the WBC but outside of the top 15 with the rest. There may, however, some lesser belt added to the contest, should it be made official.
As for how it plays out, Fury backs his countryman Chisora to win by knockout.
