PETER FURY, triumphant coach of the new world heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, has compared the upset pulled off by his nephew to Muhammad Ali’s 1964 win over Sonny Liston, while highlighting its positive impact on both the travelling community – of which the Furys are members – and children in general.

“To put his achievement into context, the last person to do something like Tyson Fury v Wladimir Klitschko was Muhammad Ali, against Sonny Liston,” Peter told Boxing News. “He made a good comment after the fight, ‘I shook up the world’, and that’s what Tyson did; no one gave him a chance. All the boxing experts didn’t think it would go three or four rounds. Wladimir had made 27 defences, been champion for 11 years and the fight was in Germany [where Klitschko has a home and has often fought], against a young, unbeaten, brash kid.

“This means the world to all the travelling communities across the world, not just in the UK. All the young children who may not get the best education in life, this shows them what they could have. It keeps kids off the street and, most of all, teaches them self-respect. It’s not only travellers either, it’s kids around the world in general, and to know it’s my nephew who achieved it is very high for our family. We’re on top of the world.”
