Danny Flexen gets help from Steve Kim, Anthony Leaver, Kevin Mitchell and Peter Fury to analyse Tyson Fury and his roller-coaster relationship with the media – in this week’s 80-page issue of Boxing News magazine.

THE backlash began before the feat had even been accomplished. Tyson Fury, the new world heavyweight champion, has been swiftly and ruthlessly vilified by the mainstream media, the euphoria generated by his outstanding victory over long-reigning Wladimir Klitschko having quickly subsided, only to be replaced by vitriol and outrage. Fury has been accused of sexism and homophobia – allegations not entirely without merit – but as more columnists and broadcasters have hopped on the anti-Fury bandwagon, genuine concerns regarding any malign influence over the world’s youth have been overshadowed by what is starting to look a little like a witch hunt. The Sun’s Steven Howard opined, “That Tyson Fury is now heavyweight boxing champion of the world shows just how bereft of any talent it [heavyweight boxing] is.”, while Guardian online columnist Julie Bindel went a step further and used Fury as a gloomy prism through which to warily eye boxing itself.
