Tyson Fury has proven himself to be one of the standout heavyweights of this generation and one of the greatest British fighters to have ever laced up the gloves. However, when ‘The Gypsy King’ was asked to name Britain’s best ever fighter, he came up with a five-man list.
Fury brought the heavyweight marbles back to the United Kingdom when he dethroned the legendary Wladimir Klitschko back in 2015, pulling off a shock upset to put an end to the sensational nine-year reign of ‘Dr Steelhammer’ on foreign soil.
Although, despite the win, a hiatus from the sport saw Fury forego the heavyweight throne and it would take another three years for the Morecambe-based big man to fight for a world title again, drawing with WBC ruler Deontay Wilder before an emphatic knockout victory in their rematch.
Three title defences would follow, but Fury then came up short when he twice collided with Oleksandr Usyk in 2024, in two consecutive attempts at claiming the undisputed heavyweight title, before announcing his retirement from boxing.
As a result, many consider Fury to be the United Kingdom’s best heavyweight since Lennox Lewis and one of the country’s most talented fighters. When asked whom he deemed to be Britain’s best, in an interview with TNT Sports, Fury included himself in a five-man shortlist.
“Prince Naseem Hamed or Carl Froch or Joe Calzaghe or Lennox Lewis or me.”
Fury has been linked to a return to action in February, in order to tee up an eventual clash with Anthony Joshua. Although, those plans have since been put to the back of everybody’s mind following Joshua’s devastating car crash.
