TYSON Fury loves a retirement. The world’s former number one heavyweight has hung up the gloves, threatened to walk away for good and teased his next moves for years.
After losing to Oleksandr Usyk for a second time, Fury posted that he had retired. While the ‘Gypsy King’ would likely return for a mega payday, against the likes of Anthony Joshua for example, he is currently keeping his chips off the table.
Fury has been busy engaging in other activities, such as an upcoming Soccer Aid management role, that was initially baited as a possible boxing comeback.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has indicated that should Fury decide to return to the ring, a shot at WBC Interim champion Agit Kabayel would be offered to him.
Germany’s Kabayel was last seen breaking down and stopping Chinese southpaw Zhilei Zhang on the Beterbiev-Bivol 2 undercard. Kabayel is looking upwards for bigger fights and, as Sulaiman explained to Sky Sports, there are few bigger than a returning Fury.
“We are absolutely in support of just making sure that the best fights can happen,” said Sulaiman, reinforcing his organisation’s commitment to having an undisputed ruler.
The notoriously stringent IBF fractured Oleksandr Usyk’s undisputed status by taking their title out of the quartet. It was subsequently won by Daniel Dubois, who could now face Usyk in a rematch.
That unsatisfactory situation is similar to Canelo Alvarez at super-middleweight who had his own IBF belt taken away. Canelo is now attempting to win it back from William Scull to become undisputed king once more.
Back in the land of the WBC, Sulaiman clarified: “…we are supporting [undisputed] again because how can you see Usyk lose a belt? That was horrible. Now they might fight again for undisputed with [Daniel] Dubois. We will see. We’re not going to push anything.”
Whether Fury comes back remains to be seen. His name, brand, and legacy within the sport mean that opportunities will swiftly present for the Manchester heavyweight to resume past glories – should he choose to do so.
