FORMER heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury has set himself an ambitious target. He wants to defend the world title more times than the legendary Joe Louis.

The thought seems far-fetched, when you consider he has fought one world title fight, which Fury did indeed win. That was back in 2015 when Fury outpointed Wladimir Klitschko. Tyson has not boxed since. The path has been cleared for him to return to the sport, but Fury doesn’t yet have another fight scheduled.

“I’ve just set myself a goal of beating the great Joe Louis’ record of 25 title defences,” Fury said on social media. “Wladimir Klitschko almost beat Joe Louis’ record, until I beat him and stopped him from equalling the great Joe Louis’ record.

“So I’ve got 25 title defences to beat in the next 10 years. Even if I have three fights in a year, I’ll beat it. It’s going to be a hard challenge but I never set a challenge that I didn’t make and if anyone’s capable of doing it, I’m capable of doing it.

“What’s that word? Longevity. That’s what I’m looking for. I ain’t no flash in the pan and you’re going to see it… All comers, 26 title defences.”
