Troy Williamson was on a run of three straight defeats up until September, but after a sudden turn in form the fan favourite is on the verge of a world title shot.
Williamson lost out to both Caoimhin Agyarko and Ishmael Davis at the domestic super-welterweight level before a move up to the middleweight division and a trip across the pond resulted in a third consecutive defeat, coming up short against Jahi Tucker last April.
The Darlington-based operator then opted to move up another weight division and overcame Mark Dickinson for the English super-middleweight title on his 168lb debut, before a sensational upset win saw him halt Callum Simpson to claim the British super-middleweight crown.
That triumph has seen Williamson rise up to #6 in the IBF’s super-middleweight ratings, that are topped by undefeated Cuban knockout artist Osleys Iglesias, who will challenge for the vacant IBF crown in his next fight.
It is understood that each of Canelo Alvarez (IBF #3) and Jaime Munguia (IBF #4) have turned down the opportunity to face Iglesias for the world title, and Hamzah Sheeraz (IBF #5) is believed to be taking advantage of his favourable position with the other sanctioning bodies, leaving Williamson next in line for a chance to become Britain’s ‘Cinderella Man’.
On X, Queensberry Promotions’ Head of Boxing, Lee Eaton, reacted to news of Williamson’s surprise shot at the super-middleweight crown.

An official order is expected soon. Should talks fail and purse bids are called, Eye of the Tiger Promotions, who have staged all five of Iglesias’ last five outings in Canada since capturing the signature of ‘El Tornado’, will be keen to land the bout, but may face stiff competition from Matchroom, who work with Williamson.
Williamson has also been ordered to defend his EBU belt against Jose Luis Navarro, though will likely vacate to push on to the world stage.
