LIGHTWEIGHT contender Tommy Coyle plans to be back in the ring sometime in May after recovering from injury.

The 26-year-old was set to box in November but had to pull out after the ligament became detached from his elbow.

Coyle has now been given the all clear from his surgeon and, after a period of light training, has begun preparations in earnest with head coach Jamie Moore.

“I’ve been given the green light. Training camp started on Monday and I’ll be looking to fight in May. I’m absolutely buzzing. I’ve really missed the game, badly,” he told Boxing News.

“I love the game, all the training. I can’t wait to get back in there and have a fight. I was in such a high profile fight with Luke [Campbell], although I didn’t win [Coyle was stopped in the 10th], I thought that I’d drop off for a year because of the injury. I was very anxious.”

Coyle topped a bill with Campbell in their hometown, Hull, back in August. With plenty of domestic operators at 135lbs, Coyle is keen to get back in the mix.

“If there’s a big fight for me to take, I’ll take it. I will fight anyone in the lightweight division and I’ll enjoy doing it. I’m not in a position to be picky,” he said.

“A fight with Ricky Burns would be great, that excites me. A fight with Sean Dodd or Scott Cardle – even a rematch with Derry Mathews if he wins the world title.”

Cardle defends his British strap against Dodd on April 2 in a rematch, after stopping Sean in the 12th round last November.

Mathews, who stopped Coyle in 10 rounds in 2013, fights for Terry Flanagan’s WBO world title tomorrow night [March 12].

Anthony Crolla – clearly a man in demand – is also a target for Coyle. Crolla defends his WBA world lightweight title against Ismael Barroso on May 7, a show Coyle could feature on.

“The lightweight division is wide open, there are some great fights. I’d love to fight Crolla. He’s a great fighter but I would love that fight, I just think I’d be too strong for him. I think it would catch fire straight away, it wouldn’t be boring that’s for sure.”
