TIM Tszyu will continue being active before his maiden world title shot when he faces Carlos Ocampo on June 18.
The super-welterweight bout will take place at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in Australia.
Tszyu 22-0 (16) will be hoping it’s his final examination before facing champion Jermell Charlo in August or September.
The 28-year-old has waited patiently for his shot having originally been scheduled to fight the American on January 28. The postponement came when Charlo sustained an injury to his left hand in training.
Six weeks later Tszyu was back in the ring beating Tony Harrison by ninth-round stoppage. Ocampo, who last time out lost widely on points to Sebastian Fundora, will be the 23rd man looking to derail Tszyu’s ambitions of emulating his father and former super-lightweight world champion Kostya.
“I don’t need to fight, I want to,” Tszyu told Fox Sports Australia.
“I fear no one. And Carlos Ocampo is the perfect test for me. In all honesty, it’s a privilege to be fighting the number one Mexican in my weight division. I always knew that eventually I was going to come up against this style. I’ve watched so many Mexican legends throughout the years and always admired their tough, all-action style.
“Dad destroyed the greatest Mexican fighter of all time in Julio Cesar Chavez, and I would love to do the same. Perhaps Chavez is Canelo for me one day, who knows?”
On the June 18 undercard Tszyu’s fellow Aussies Sam Goodman and Liam Wilson will look to make it a great night for boxing down under. The latter will make his return after his fight of the year contender against Emmanuel Navarette in February.
Goodman 14-0 (7) will face American Ra’eese Aleem 20-0 (12) at super-bantamweight while Wilson 11-2 (7) takes on Eduardo Ramirez 27-3-3 (12) at super-featherweight.
