Terri Harper went from the chip shop to world champion

Terri Harper has a key world title defence coming up on home turf. Mark Baldwin caught up with her as the preparations gathered pace.

Age: 28

Nationality: British

From: Doncaster

Record: 15-2-2

Next fight: I’m fighting Natalie Zimmermann in defence of my WBO world lightweight title, headlining at my home stadium in Doncaster.

When and why did you start boxing:

When I was 10, I watched Jack Osbourne on the TV show Adrenaline Junkie and I wanted to give it a try.

Favourite all-time fighter and why:

Katie Taylor because of the obstacles she had to overcome and how she has paved the way for female fighters.

Best fight you’ve seen:

The first fight between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden.

Personal career highlight:

When I became a three-weight world champion last September, beating Rhiannon Dixon to win the WBO world lightweight title after being written off by most people.

Toughest opponent:

Sandy Ryan or Alycia Baumgardner for obvious reasons.

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:

My best is that I’m humble and dedicated to the sport. My worst is probably that I am sometimes too nice.

Training tip:

Listen to your body. Rest is just as important.

Best friends in boxing:

All of my gym family.

What’s the attraction of boxing:

For me it’s the discipline and the sacrifice, both physically and mentally that’s needed, which then translates on fight night.

Where would you be without boxing:

Still working at the chip shop.

What has boxing given you:

A very blessed life.

Who inspires you the most and why:

My nan. She has been through it all and is the strongest person to this day.

What one thing would you change to make the sport better:

Less online trolls.

Best advice received:

Take every opportunity, no matter how big or small.

First-ever boxing memory:

The first time I walked into the boxing gym with my dad, I have never looked back since.

Something not many people know about you:

I am actually really boring and enjoy reading, walking, meditating, arts and crafts. I need to be in bed before 9 pm.
