Terence Crawford has revealed what he told Teofimo Lopez Sr during a heated exchange at yesterday’s weigh-in for Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson.

The two pound-for-pound stars came face-to-face for the final time before their super-lightweight clash, which takes place in the small hours of tomorrow morning at Madison Square Garden, New York.

With both of them keeping below the 140lb limit, there was no drama on the scales but rather a brief confrontation that ensued between Crawford and Lopez Sr.

Holding his son’s WBO world title, Lopez Sr appeared to be taunting ‘Bud’ – a close friend of Stevenson – while prancing around in a bizarre manner.

In response, the former three-division undisputed champion, who announced his retirement last month, decided to approach the father and trainer for a few choice words.

Speaking with Fight Hub TV later that evening, the 38-year-old had no issue explaining why he took umbrage at Lopez Sr’s behaviour.

“I just told him about himself – he knows what I said. He’s just got to stop being a clown.

“It’s cool to sell a fight but I’m not fighting. Leave me alone – I’m retired. You don’t [have to] make antics at me.”

It was perhaps only natural that the respective teams of Stevenson and Lopez would eventually clash, especially when considering the history of trash talking between Crawford and Lopez.

But regardless of that, the fight itself is expected to deliver a compelling spectacle which should keep fans firmly on the edge of their seats, even if there are slightly less fireworks than what has been promised.

Based on their styles, this super-lightweight encounter seems likely to be more of a high-octane chess match between two elite counterpunchers, rather than a chaotic shootout between a pair of reckless gunslingers.
