Teofimo Lopez puts his WBO super-lightweight world title on the line tonight against Shakur Stevenson at Madison Square Garden, New York.
Betting underdog Lopez looks to defend his belt for a fourth time, reaffirm his pound-for-pound credentials, and solve the as-yet uncrackable defensive puzzle presented by Stevenson, who bids to become a four-weight world champion at just 28 years old.
On the undercard, heavyweight Jarrell Miller returns against Kingsley Ibeh, Bruce Carrington faces Carlos Castro for the vacant WBC Featherweight World Title. Finally, Keyshawn Davis makes his anticipated super-lightweight debut against Jamaine Ortiz, who, despite two defeats, has never been in the business of giving anyone an easy night’s work.
Boxing News brings you results, analysis and a live scorecard for the main event.
Undercard results
Jarrell Miller vs Kingsley Ibeh – Heavyweight
Result: Miller SD. Ibeh took the first half of the fight, landing the cleaner shots and quite literally punching Miller’s toupee off in round two. ‘Big Baby’s engine kicked into gear in the second half to allow him to take it on the cards by a hair, even if his wig had suffered a 10-8 round. A forgettable, slow, sloppy slug-it-out bout that will strike no fear into the hearts of heavyweight rivals. 96-94 Miller, 97-93 Ibeh, 97-93 Miller.
Bruce Carrington vs Carlos Castro – WBC Featherweight World Title
Result: Carrington KO 9. ‘Shu Shu’ Carrington survived a scare in the fourth, focusing on his accuracy and gaining ground on a dangerous Castro to end the fight in round nine with a blistering and brutal five-punch combination. A fantastic world title win in front of his hometown fans.
Keyshawn Davis vs Jamaine Ortiz – Super-Lightweight
Result: Davis TKO 12. Keyshawn Davis arrives at 140 with an impressive display against an awkward operator in Ortiz. Davis picked up a steady lead as the rounds went on, but Ortiz did enough to disrupt his rythym and prevent the fight from really catching fire. That was until the eleventh, when he took a knee from a crushing body shot. With 10 seconds left in the final round, and with one eye completely closed due to swelling, Ortiz went down from the same shot and the fight was waved off. Measured, punishing and patient from Davis.
