Teofimo Lopez teams up with new trainer Eddy Reynoso

With Haney fight on the horizon, Lopez levels up behind the scenes

Teofimo Lopez teams up with new trainer Eddy Reynoso

IN an interesting move going forward, Teofimo Lopez has added top trainer Eddy Reynoso to his team. The hook-up is unsurprising given the blossoming relationship between Lopez and Reynoso’s prize asset, Canelo Alvarez. ‘The Takeover’ has been invited out to train with Canelo in the past and the pair recently enjoyed some light sparring.

It will be interesting to see how the dynamic works out, as Joey Gamache was previously part of the setup before exiting. Teofimo Lopez Sr will remain in camp. Teofimo Jr’s career has hit a bit of a lull since a summer 2023 win over Josh Taylor. That was Lopez’s second big career victory, adding to a 2020 win over Vasyl Lomachenko that rocketed him up the pound-for-pound rankings on the cusp of becoming a star.

A year’s inactivity, ending in a tight loss to George Kambosos Jr left Teo’s prospects on ice as he toiled to rebuild. The Taylor win certainly reignited his career, but performances against Sandor Martin and Jamaine Ortiz around that success showed Teofimo’s frustration at dealing with certain styles. Lopez has been linked with a Devin Haney fight and will need every last ounce of valuable advice on cutting off the ring effectively, which has caused Lopez issues when facing fleet-footed movers.

Canelo Alvarez light-heavyweight

Eddy Reynoso has had mixed success with fighters not named Canelo. Luis Nery and Ryan Garcia passed by the Reynoso training camp, while Oscar Valdez has won a world title under Eddy. Reynoso is good at sealing up defensive leaks, and Lopez’s athletic gifts, combined with Eddy’s backfoot discipline, can help mould a stronger fighter. Lopez currently holds the WBO super-lightweight title, recording a successful defence over Steve Claggett in Florida at the end of June.
