Jaron Ennis is hoping to dominate this new generation of boxing following the retirement of Terence Crawford, and now Shakur Stevenson, who has sparred both men, has compared the power of ‘Boots’ and ‘Bud’.
Ennis had been pursuing a shot at Crawford before the Omaha-born sensation hung up the gloves after a career-defining win against Canelo Alvarez back in September, with some fans believing that the Philadelphian could have been the man to hand Crawford his first defeat.
It now seems as though that fight will never take place, with Crawford himself having labelled this as ‘The Boots Era’ after he retired from the sport.
Last month, Ennis became a two-division unified world champion by halting Xander Zayas to capture the WBA and WBO super-welterweight world titles and he is now focussed on the undisputed crown, as he looks to climb the pound-for-pound rankings.
Speaking on X, pound-for-pound rival Shakur Stevenson admitted that Ennis’ power can be compared to Crawford’s, but that they are different kinds of punchers.
“Boots and Bud was the hardest punchers I sparred with, but it’s very different power.
“Bud’s s**t thudding like boom!! Boots’ s**t is sharp as f**k, like a bullet is coming, if that makes sense. Neither you want to let punch you.”
Ennis looks set to compete for the IBF super-welterweight marble in his next outing, with a showdown against Josh Kelly seemingly on the horizon, but Kelly must first defend that belt this weekend, taking on Caoimhin Agyarko on the Anthony Joshua vs. Kristian Prenga undercard.
