Shock defeats will produce new National Amateur Champions
England Boxing

THERE will be new National Amateur Champions crowned at super heavyweight and middleweight in Derby on Saturday after shock losses for Derrick Osadolor and Mark Haughan at Nottingham University.

Osadolor was thrown out in the third round of his semi-final against Joshua Simms (Freedom) after being penalised for a third time, and Simms will meet Matthew Williams (Acocks Green) in the final.

The 20-year-old overwhelmed Tobi Lawal and Alex Williams (Oxford) in two and three rounds, respectively, in the space of 24 hours to reach the final. Neither could stay with him.

In the semi-finals, Alex Williams took a count in the dying moments of the second round as he started to fade. The minute’s break revived him and he was able to match Matthew punch for punch in the third – but only for a minute.

The Midlander started to out-punch him and then banged in a flurry of body shots to set up a left hook to the jaw, forcing him to give ground.

Matthew jumped all over him to force a count and another unanswered volley of punches brought the stoppage.

Haughan (Carlisle Villa) had his reign as 75kgs champion ended by March southpaw Harley Burrows after one of the best semi-finals.

Burrows won a deserved 3-2 split after giving Haughan two counts in the last.

Burrows took a count late in the second after outlanding Haughan in the round up to then.

There were also semi-final exits for number one seeds Jaden Cayenne (54kgs) and Ellis Panter (67kgs).

Panter, beaten on a split in last year’s final, had outpointed Aman Kumar (Cleary’s) six years previously, but Kumar had the momentum going into their semi-final duel.

The clash was his fifth in the NACs, while Panter had been out of action since last October.

Kumar was the sharper in the opening two rounds and Panter’s last round rally came too late to prevent a unanimous points defeat.

Kumar meets Luke Prior (Marybone) on Saturday after he beat CJ McAllister (Norwich City) on a 3-2 split.

Cayenne was beaten on a 4-1 split by Whitley southpaw Reuben Muston after a tight contest.

Muston, crowned Development and NABGC Champion previously this season, meets Abdulrahman Burton (Longsight) in the final.

Belvedere light-heavyweight Bobby Wallace hit too hard with his right for Tommy Ledwidge (Bulkington).

Wallace gave him three counts for a stoppage in 2.20 of the first that sends him through to face number one seed Nabil Abdullahi (Albion) in the final.

Alice Pumphrey (Purge) was one of the outstanding females in action. She unanimously outpointed Carmel Casey (Sheffield City).

Pumphrey took early charge with combinations and pot shots and went up a gear in the last after Casey made the second more competitive.

Kayla Allen took less than a minute to reach the 66kgs final, taking out Celia Raimondi (Albion BA) with a perfectly placed left hook to the ribs, setting up a match with Zaynah Casserly (Aston) on Saturday.
