Two-division world champion Shane Mosley has predicted how a fantasy fight between Canelo Alvarez and ‘Marvelous’ Marvin Hagler would have played out.
Canelo has ruled in four divisions, claiming world honours between super-welterweight and light-heavyweight and becoming the super-middleweight division’s first ever undisputed champion via an iconic run 11-month run.
The powers of the 35-year-old appeared to have faded as of late, with no stoppage wins since 2021 and a defeat to a former lightweight champion Terence Crawford in his most recent outing.
That being said, his reputation could be recovered in September, when he challenges for the WBC super-middleweight world title.
Still, as his career approaches its final chapter, fans are left debating where Canelo sits amongst the greats of his country, the modern era and of all time, pondering how he would have fared against other iconic fighters of the division’s in which he reigned.
Speaking on the Mi Gallo Boxing Podcast, hosted by two-time middleweight title challenger Gabriel Rosado, Mosley picked middleweight fan-favourite Hagler to come out on top in a fantasy fight against prime Canelo.
“I think that Marvin might get him.”
Hagler never boxed outside of the middleweight division during a 67-fight career, ruling as an undisputed champion for seven years and boasting the sixth longest reign in the division’s history; famously overcoming Roberto Duran and Thomas Hearns during that time.
In total, Hagler won 62 of those 67 professional fights, with his only three defeats coming against Bobby Watts, Willie Monroe and Sugar Ray Leonard, along with draws to Vito Antuofermo and Sugar Ray Searles.
