Sean McComb beats Alexis Nahuel Torres on points

BELFAST boxer Sean McComb shook off 14 months of inactivity by outpointing Argentina’s Alexis Nahuel Torres over six rounds in Hull. Referee Mark Lyson scored it 60-54 to ‘The Public Nuisance’, who was seeking to shed any rust ahead of a surge towards titles or rivals.

McComb’s longer arms allowed him to whip home shots from both hands in the form of uppercuts and body shots. Torres did have patches of success, getting inside and letting his shots go, but lacked the power and consistency to make a dent.

The two southpaws got at it as McComb began breaking his man down in round four, landing repeated chopping jabs, followed by swiping lefts. Most of what McComb threw, Torres’ chin accepted and soaked up.

Torres landed a little tap to the body in round five that made McComb back up briefly and drop the gangly levers around the waistline. The Irishman has found a new home with GBM Sports and Izzy Asif, hoping it will propel him towards the top.

In the build-up, McComb called out a string of fighters, including the UK’s finest, Adam Azim and Dalton Smith. Azim is signed to Boxxer and Sky Sports, while Smith is on the verge of a world title shot, so both seem unlikely to entertain the idea of boxing a tricky southpaw.

McComb improves to 19-2 (5 KOs) while Torres drops to 13-12-1 (7 KOs) as his defeats threaten to catch up to the win column. McComb’s trainer, Pete Taylor, seemed content with his man’s work.

“I was always training, always sparring, keeping myself in the gym with Pete and it showed tonight,” said McComb.

“We all know I want a rematch with Barboza, I’m not going to get it. I’m going to the UK scene. Anyone wants it, I’m here.”

Promoter Izzy Asif added: “I’ve been in boxing for 22 years. Some of the skillset you’ve got, I’ve not seen many people in boxing do that.”
