COMMONWEALTH Games gold medallist Scott Fitzgerald has left the GB squad to turn professional.
Having signed with Matchroom, he’ll box at super-welterweight, making his debut on November 7 in Liverpool.
Fitzgerald rose to prominence when he won the ABAs with a high tempo style. Chosen to represent England at Glasgow 2014, there he boxed with economy, precision and power, scoring some impressive knockdowns on his way to win gold. Picking up experience in the World Series of Boxing, he showed grit and resilience against quality Russian, and future Olympian Radzhab Butaev.
Turning pro is a surprise move, no GB welterweight has yet qualified for the next Olympic Games and Scott could have stayed in the running. He though will be one to watch.
Earlier this month another top amateur, Andrew Selby also turned professional before Rio 2016.
