Savannah Marshall: ‘I’m just determined to get where I want to be’

When and why you started boxing:
I started when I was 11. I just followed a few friends into the gym.

Favourite all-time fighter:
Dmitry Pirog. He didn’t have a long career but I loved his style and how he flowed.

Best fight you’ve seen:
Dmitry Pirog versus Daniel Jacobs.

Personal career highlight:
Qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympics. I had such a bad cycle after 2012, I really didn’t think that I’d qualify, so when I did it was such a relief.

Toughest opponent:
Nouchka Fontijn in the amateurs. My fights with her weren’t tough, more technical, but out of the five times we met, she won four. It was technically difficult.

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:
I’d say my best is my determination. I’m just really determined to get to where I want to be. My worst is that sometimes I overthink.

Training tip:
[Trainer] Peter Fury always says you’ve got to enjoy it and have fun. Otherwise it just becomes an effort and you start trying too hard and things don’t happen for you.

Favourite meal/restaurant:
I love seafood, so somewhere that does a nice seafood platter.

Best friends in boxing:
Chantelle Cameron. I’ve been good friends with Chantelle since we were both 18 and now we both flat-share as pros in Manchester.

Other sportsman you would like to be:
I’ve never been a big fan but I’m getting into MMA at the minute, so I’d have to say Conor McGregor.

Last film/TV show you saw:
I watched the ITV series, Hatton Garden. I enjoyed it that much I’ve just got the autobiography of Brian Reader.

Who would play you in a film of your life:
I’d pick Angelina Jolie.

Have you ever been starstruck:
When I made my pro debut in Las Vegas [in August 2017], I was seeing the doctor and I turned to my left and Conor McGregor was stood beside me. I was shocked at how small he was. He looks a lot bigger on telly.

Last time you cried:
I’m not much of a crier.

Best advice received:
If you do what you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.

Something not many people know about you:
I’m very, very determined. Once I put my mind to something, I won’t stop.
