Former world champion Billy Joe Saunders is open to staging a comeback fight, but only if it happens to be against an old domestic foe.

The slick southpaw last competed in 2021 after losing his WBO super-middleweight title via an eighth-round stoppage defeat to Canelo Alvarez.

Before that, Saunders had become a two-division world champion but, in truth, his best performances came down at 160lbs, where he dethroned Andy Lee for the WBO strap in 2015.

The Hertfordshire man then retained his belt with a dominant display against David Lemieux, who was dealt a comprehensive boxing lesson in their 2017 encounter.

Since last stepping through the ropes, though, Saunders has occasionally expressed his interest in rematching Chris Eubank Jr, who he defeated with a split decision victory in 2014.

While the scorecards would suggest otherwise, it was a fairly convincing win for Saunders, who largely befuddled Eubank with his superior technical attributes.

Yet the 36-year-old has told talkSPORT that he would still entertain a rematch, if only to prove his point and silence Eubank’s protests over their first fight.

“The only [man] I would really come out [of retirement] for is obviously Eubank. That is about it, because I know I could go in there without any warm-up [fight] and beat him. Especially after his last performance.

“I’m not going to go in there and think I’m going to chase this young fighter [or] that young fighter – [David] Benavidez and all that.”

Eubank’s last performance saw him suffer two knockdowns and lose a unanimous decision to Conor Benn in November, despite winning their first encounter by the same verdict.
