SAUL ‘CANELO’ ALVAREZ looks set to collide with James Kirkland, ESPN have reported. The bout will take place at a catch-weight of 155lbs on May 2 – the date previously scheduled for Alvarez-Miguel Cotto before talks broke down – at the Alamodome in San Antonio, or Las Vegas’ Thomas and Mack Center.

The contest will be staged by Golden Boy Promotions and Oscar De La Hoya told ESPN that the fight will be on HBO, not pay-per-view.

“The fight is done. Kirkland signed, Canelo has signed,” De La Hoya said.

Oscar also confirmed that should the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao showdown get signed for the same date – looking increasingly unlikely – Alvarez-Kirkland will still go ahead but on a different date.

“We’ll know in a few more days exactly what day and what venue the fight will be at, but it will either be Las Vegas or San Antonio,” De La Hoya said. “We’re focused on what Canelo is doing, not Mayweather. The kid is firm on fighting in May. But, like I have said, if Mayweather fights Manny Pacquiao on May 2, we will move off the date out of respect for the fans.”
