SAM EGGINGTON toppled Frankie Gavin in a ferocious local Derby at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham Saturday.

Gavin is a former British and Commonwealth welterweight champion, a former world title challenger and as an amateur he won Britain’s first ever gold medal at the World championships. Eggington has held the British title himself in the past himself but is known more for a willingness to enter into a toe-to-toe war than his boxing skills.

Frankie came in over the weight for this fight and, although he managed to engage Eggington in a thriller, ultimately came undone. Sam floored Gavin in the third round and finished the contest in the eighth, stopping Frankie.

“I didn’t realise how big he was,” Gavin told Sky Sports afterwards. “Don’t get me wrong, I want to do it again.”

“I showed I’m not a little fighter who runs off,” he insisted

“I’m absolutely over the moon. Me and Frankie had a bit of needle but it’s fine again now,” Eggington said. “Credit to Frankie, I didn’t think he had it like that… We had a good fight.”
