AL HAYMON’S team approached Matchroom Boxing about the unexpected possibility of Sam Eggington challenging WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia. The Englishman’s team ultimately turned it down because the offer was too small. Sam Eggington boxes Frankie Gavin on October 22 in Birmingham.
“A couple of weeks before this fight was made I had a phone call from Al Haymon’s team and they said to me, ‘Do you have any welterweights to fight Danny Garcia?’ I’ve only got two welterweights,” promoter Eddie Hearn said. “So I said yeah I’ve got Frankie Gavin and I’ve got Sam Eggington. I think Frankie Gavin might work because he’s boxed Kell Brook and stuff like that, go away and have a look at him and come back. They phoned me up the next day and said we looked at them and we liked the Sam Eggington fight.”
He continued, “They said would $100,000 do it? I said no, don’t insult us. ‘What about $125,000?’ I said no, Danny Garcia, you’ve got to be north of $150,000.”
Sam Eggington though wanted the fight. “He would have taken it for 10,000,” Hearn noted.
It means the Gavin-Eggington winner could snare a major fight after this. “These opportunities are readily available to fight these kind of guys and that just goes to show you,” Hearn said. “This fight will give them the platform to move on to those big fights.”
