One of the most intriguing matchups of 2026 is Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson.
The two 28-year-olds will meet on January 31 in New York, with Lopez making the fourth defence of his WBO super-lightweight belt, while Stevenson moves up in weight in pursuit of becoming a four-division world champion.
Despite the star power on both sides, some believe their contrasting styles may not blend well, potentially producing a cautious, tactical affair.
Ryan Garcia, another of the sport’s major attractions, recently announced he will challenge WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios on February 21. During a live chat on X, the 27-year-old was asked for his view on Lopez-Stevenson and gave a clear verdict.
“Shakur [will win]. Just because Teofimo likes to fight people he can counter. With Shakur he has to chase him. It’s not a good style matchup for Teofimo. If Teofimo finds a way then kudos to him.
“I don’t see Teofimo being that aggressive. He’s not very aggressive. He’s more of a natural counter-puncher but not an aggressive fighter, but he’ll go get you if he has to.”
Stevenson produced a career-best performance last time out, dismantling relentless Mexican contender William Zepeda. Lopez, meanwhile, looked a level above Arnold Barboza in the third defence of his title.
