Talk of a showdown between Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis and Terence Crawford has reignited over the last week, with fight fans keen to see whether the Philadelphian would be able to hand Crawford a first career defeat.
Now, reigning WBC welterweight world champion, Ryan Garcia, has had his say on the potential fight.
All hope of seeing Ennis and Crawford meet in the ring seemed to end last December, when ‘Bud’ announced that he was retiring from the sport after becoming boxing’s first post-war three-division undisputed world champion.
However, the pair crossed paths on last Friday’s DAZN broadcast of Damian Knyba’s decision win over Andy Ruiz Jr and it did not take long for the topic of their potential meeting to arise.
In an interview with Club Shay Shay, Ryan Garcia weighed in on the possible scrap, believing that Ennis could have the speed to put an end to the Omaha southpaw’s 42-fight unbeaten streak,
“100% Boots could beat him, I’m just being real, bro.
“Canelo was slow, he had problems with Gamboa because Gamboa was fast. Yes [he beat him], but he had problems. I am just saying that you need a fast fighter to beat him.
“You can’t have Errol Spence Jr. moving at two miles per hour or f***ing Canelo, where every shot is a load-up, like come on bro.”
King Ry’ then went on to offer himself as an eventual opponent for Crawford down the line, sharing his willingness to venture up to super-welterweight for that opportunity in a few bouts’ time.
“I would love to [fight Bud], I have always said that. I want smoke with that. I would go up to 154, I wouldn’t go up to 160 but I would go to 154.
“Once I beat Conor Benn in spectacular fashion, once I beat Teofimo [Lopez] in devastating fashion and once I kick Devin [Haney]’s a** for the last time in my life, I will be undisputed and then I am going to callout like let’s go Terence, run that. I need all of that.”
Whilst many hope to see Ennis-Crawford take place, it is expected that WBA and WBO 154lb champion, ‘Boots’, will instead partake in a three-belt unification with IBF titleholder, Josh Kelly, before the end of 2026.
