Roy Jones Jr had just one name in mind when it came to selecting his choice for the most skilful boxer of all time.

Jones could arguably place himself at the top of that list, with his incredible attributes leading to world title wins in four weight divisions, beginning at middleweight before most impressively becoming world heavyweight champion in 2003.

That triumph saw Jones become the first former middleweight world champion to win a world heavyweight title in over a century, while he also spent a number of years as undisputed light heavyweight champion.

Other boxers that are often mentioned for possessing elite skills include the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Vasiliy Lomachenko, Pernell Whitaker and James Toney, but none of those made the cut when it came to Jones picking his number one.

Instead, Jones once revealed that he gave the honour of the most skilful fighter to the late, great Salvador Sanchez.

“The best I ever saw? Skill-wise, a guy by the name of Salvador Sánchez. The best all-round fighter that I ever saw.”

Sanchez rose to prominence in the early 1980s, spending a number of years as world featherweight champion. He possessed top level counter-punching and was extremely effective both on the front and back foot.

Many onlookers were tipping the Mexican to potentially go on to become one of the greatest boxers of all time, but tragically Sanchez was involved in a fatal car crash in 1982, passing away at the age of 23 and ending his career with a record of 44 wins from 46 fights.
