Roy Jones Jr suspects Errol Spence Jr could be involved in the “biggest fight” at 154lbs if he comes through his showdown against Tim Tszyu.
The pair will square off at the Afterpay Arena in Sydney, Australia, on July 25, with Spence ending a three-year layoff following his defeat to Terence Crawford.
Despite being billed as a 50/50 contest, their undisputed welterweight clash ended in one-sided fashion as Crawford engineered a ninth-round stoppage.
As a result, Spence was relieved of his WBC, IBF and WBA titles but now looks to reinvent himself at a higher weight.
Taking on a fellow former world champion in Tszyu, the 36-year-old will return at a catchweight at 158lbs before bidding, he hopes, to make his mark at super-welterweight.
One potential opponent is WBC champion Sebastian Fundora, his PBC stablemate, who Spence was in talks with before agreeing to face Tszyu.
The most lucrative fight, however, could end being against Vergil Ortiz Jr, who remains a close rival of WBO and WBA champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis.
While sharing his thoughts via ALL THE SMOKE FIGHT, pound-for-pound legend Jones named Ortiz vs Spence as the biggest fight in the division.
“The biggest fight right now, for that division, is Errol Spence – if he beats Tszyu – vs Vergil Ortiz in Dallas [Texas]. They [would] sell out Dallas [AT&T] Stadium.
“You don’t throw that away [by] chasing Boots; you let Boots go and fight Fundora first – you wait and see what happens in the Errol Spence [vs Tszyu] fight, if you’re smart.
“You [would] make way more money right there in Dallas Stadium.”
As two Texans who trained at the same amateur gym, a showdown between Ortiz and Spence would certainly generate plenty of ticket sales at the 80,000-capacity AT&T Stadium.
