Jaron Ennis and Vergil Ortiz look set for a super-welterweight showdown next year.
The duo are regarded as two of the best talents in all of boxing, and after they each won their latest fights, it appears it have paved the way for them to square off.
Ennis was first to hold up his end of the bargain, having vacated his unified world welterweight titles and moved up to 154lbs in October to stop Uisma Lima inside one round, extending his unbeaten record to 35-0 in the process.
Ortiz then returned earlier this month, stopping Erickson Lubin in the second round to move to 24-0 in his own right, and following his win he then participated in a heated face-off with Ennis inside the ring.
Many big names from the boxing world have already made their predictions for how the proposed clash could go, and now Hall of Fame inductee Roy Jones Jr is the latest to do so.
Speaking to FightHype, Jones broke down the contest, and revealed where it can be won and lost.
“Tough fight to call. This is why boxing is good. It’s a 50-50 fight. Ortiz is peaking right now. He’s very hard to beat right now. He’s a very strong guy and a durable guy.
“Ennis might have the edge in skills, but as we know, hard work gives skills a hard time if the skills don’t have any heart in it. He’s got to make sure that he has that and that’s the only thing we haven’t seen out of Ennis yet. We haven’t seen him pushed to the brink of does he have a championship quality heart, and that’s what Ortiz is going to bring out of him.
“We haven’t seen anybody push Ortiz where he has to work every round. Can he take what he has and stretch it out over 12 rounds. Having the questions that we have about both of them, the other one has the answer for it, and that’s why we need to see it now.”
With negotiations currently ongoing over the fight, boxing fans will be hoping it can be made without any problems.
