THE lighter weights are often overlooked. But Roman Gonzalez might just be the man to carry the flyweight division to prominence. He may not have upstaged Gennady Golovkin, few could, but the Nicaraguan has dazzled on “GGG’s” two most recent undercards, savaging Edgar Sosa and then taking out Brian Viloria. He is now viewed by many as being one of the best boxers in the world.

“I feel very happy with being number one pound for pound,” he said. “It’s a team effort and our effort has paid off. It doesn’t bring any pressure. It just brings motivation to me.”

He’s come up from humble beginnings and adds, “I would never have imagined to be number one pound for pound or to have won three world championships.”

To truly hold attention though he needs another major fight. Before his last outing, Gonzalez was looking at Juan Francisco Estrada, whom he beat for the WBA light-flyweight crown in 2012. That was the last time anyone took Gonzalez the distance. Since then Estrada has won and retained both the WBA and WBO flyweight titles. With Gonzalez’s WBC belt in the mix, this would be an appealing battle, a big clash for the small men.

“I would like the rematch with Estrada, I think that would be a good fight,” Gonzalez said.
