ROMAN GONZALEZ will defend the WBC world super-flyweight title he won from Carlos Cuadras earlier this year in a rematch, which will take place in March 2017.

Gonzalez – pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world – became Nicaragua’s first ever four weight world champion when he outpointed Cuadras in September.

The bout was one of the best fights of the year and came down to a close decision, hence the rematch. At the WBC;s 54th annual convention this week it was confirmed that Gonzalez and Cuadras will meet again.

They were originally planning to fight earlier in 2017 however the fight was pushed back after the death of Gonzalez’s head trainer Arnulfo Obando.

Gonzalez was also named the WBC fighter of the year during the convention, having successfully defend his WBC flyweight title in April against McWilliams Arroyo before moving up in weight to take on then-unbeaten Cuadras.

The rematch between the two super-flyweights is one of the best that can be made in the sport. The WBC also confirmed that the winner will have to face Thailand’s Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in a mandatory defence.
