Rocky Fielding on beating Canelo: ‘Just punch him in the face until he goes down’

A cheerful Rocky Fielding looks forward to taking down Canelo Alvarez, writes John Dennen

HE might be going in to his December 15 clash with Canelo Alvarez as a hefty underdog, but Liverpool’s Rocky Fielding doesn’t sound overawed by their looming contest at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Mexican superstar is one of the best fighters in the sport, at any weight, but Fielding has a simple plan to beat him. “Just punch him in the face dead, dead hard till he goes down,” he says cheerfully.

“I’ve just got to do what I’ve got to do.”

But more seriously, Fielding insists that no one should write him off against Alvarez. Canelo after all is moving up to 168lbs for the first time.

“People are thinking that’s me done in a round or two,” he says but promises, “I’ll thrive off it. I’ll give it everything I’ve got.

“Everything that we’ve worked out with Jamie [Moore, his trainer], it’ll come off on December 15.”

Moore notes that Fielding’s power will be greater than anticipated. “I don’t think Rocky’s record really tells the tale of how hard he punches,” the trainer said. “By the middle rounds Rocky should have a real foothold in the fight and if it plays out the way I think it’s going to play I think it’ll be our fight to lose.”

Fielding also insists he won’t be phased by the occasion or the build up to the event. “I’m getting stopped in the streets where I’m from,” he said.

“Everything’s been big but I’ve been me.”
