THE medals for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games have been unveiled.

These medals weigh 500 grams, slightly heavier than the medals at the last Olympic Games (which were 400g).

2,488 medals have been produced, 812 gold, 812 silver and 864 bronze. The gold has been extracted without using mercury in a sustainable fashion and the silver and bronze medals have been produced using 30 per cent recycled materials. They all come in tasteful wooden cases made of freijo wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

“Now I can see it, I can feel it!” Michael Conlan tweeted after seeing the images.

“These are the Olympic medals that I have been competing for my whole life,” declared Antony Fowler.
