Richard Commey isn’t giving away his secrets
Mikey Williams/Top Rank

When and why you started boxing:
Back when I was kickboxing in the UAE, my friend, Eamonn Molloy, encouraged me to take up boxing.

Favourite all-time fighter:
Floyd Mayweather is my favourite boxer ever.

Best fight you’ve seen:
Tyson Fury against “Del Boy” [Dereck Chisora] – their first fight.

Personal career highlight:
My best moment in boxing so far was when I became a world champion [by stopping Isa Chaniev in two rounds in February last year to win the IBF lightweight title].

Toughest opponent:
My toughest opponent was Gary Buckland [w ud 12 – July 2014], as that was my first major title fight outside of Ghana. [The Commonwealth lightweight belt was on the line].

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:
I can’t say about my strengths and weaknesses, as that’d be giving my secrets away!

Training tip:
It’s simple… just train hard.

Favourite meal/restaurant:
My favourite type of food is jollof rice.

Best friends in boxing:
My best friends in the sport are my manager, Michael Amoo-Bediako, and my trainer, Andre Rozier.

Other sportsman you would like to be:
I’d choose to be Steven Gerrard.

Last film/TV show you saw:
Recently I watched [martial arts film] Fist of Legend.

Who would play you in a film of your life:
I’d pick Jet Li to play me. He’s in Fist of Legend.

Have you ever been starstruck:
Yes, when I saw 50 Cent in Las Vegas after my fight against Bahodir Mamadjonov [w rsf 8 – May 2015]. I was also starstruck when I saw Wayne Rooney, Darren Fletcher and Wesley Snipes at a fight in Madison Square Garden.

Last time you cried:
I cried when I came back to Ghana after losing my world title and realised how sad and unhappy everyone was.

Best advice received:
The best advice I’ve received is to always be myself and never change.

Worst rumour about yourself:
That I fainted in the locker room after my fight with Teofimo Lopez.

Something not many people know about you:
I’m an ambassador for Christ.
